Flashback 2010 : Khalifa in Quito, Sobhy in Koln

In 2009 the Individual events moved from biannual to an annual staging, but with bids already in place the Boys headed to Quito, Ecuador and the Girls to Koln, Germany.

Happy Birthday Amanda!

The Girls were first, with the final held unusually early on 29th June. It was good timing for USA’s Amanda Sobhy though as she claimed the title on her 17th birthday, beating Egypt’s Nour El Tayeb in four games, having taken out 14-year-old defending champion Nour El Sherbini in the semis.

Off to the Equator

At the end of July the Boys headed for the equator, and it was Amr Khaled Khalifa who outlasted fellow Egyptian Ali Farag in the final, on an all-glass court at El Condado Shopping Mall in Quito.

Khalifa became the third successive Egyptian winner of the event, extending Egypt’s grip on the title to six years after Ramy Ashour won the trophy in 2004 & 2006, and Mohamed El Shorbagy in 2008 & 2009. The country secured a clean sweep of the 2010 medals when Marwan El Shorbagy beat Pakistan’s Farhan Zaman in the bronze medal play-off.

Then in the Team event the Egyptians regained the title with a 2-1 victory over defending champions Pakistan in the final, Marwan taking the deciding match.
